Abstract

The aim of this study is to provide a systematic overview of the concept of the metaverse, a concept that has emerged with technological advancements, through bibliometric analysis. The study also aims to identify research trends related to the metaverse. Data from studies across different topics, sourced from the Web of Science and Scopus databases, were considered. The studies obtained from these two databases were analyzed using WOSViewer software for bibliometric analysis, focusing on publications indexed between 1995 and 2024.An analysis of 2,754 works related to the metaverse in the Web of Science database shows that the highest number of studies were published in 2023 (1,578) and 2022 (759), while the lowest number was in 1995 (1). The predominant publication types were journal articles (1,744) and conference papers (536). When examining the distribution of publications by country, the majority of studies were from China (770), with most publications being in English (2,673) and a smaller number in Spanish (38). Regarding the most frequently used keywords in metaverse-related publications, “Metaverse” appeared 1,317 times, “virtual reality” 402 times, “augmented reality” 207 times, “blockchain” 163 times, and “artificial intelligence” 118 times. Furthermore, publications indexed in SSCI (663), ESCI (505), and SCIE (1,229) were prominent. In the Scopus database, the highest number of studies on the metaverse were published in 2023 (2,857) and 2022 (1,181), while the lowest number were in 1995 (1), 2000 (1), and 2022 (1). The predominant publication types in Scopus were also journal articles (2,149) and conference papers (1,637). The majority of the studies originated from China (1,031), with most publications being in English (4,699) and Chinese (105). The most frequently used keywords in these publications were “Metaverse” (2,542 times), “virtual reality” (693 times), “augmented reality” (327 times), and “artificial intelligence” (176 times). This bibliometric analysis provides insight into the growing academic interest in the metaverse and highlights key trends and research areas in this rapidly developing field.
