Abstract
Mardin Castle has attracted attention with its inaccessibility, robustness and difficulty to capture, with its structure located on a high hill throughout history, and has made a name for itself. The inclusion of Mardin in the Ottoman lands took place in the period of Yavuz Sultan Selim after the Chaldiran War. Despite the peaceful surrender of the city by the people, the Safavid forces retreated to the inner castle and defended, and a tough and long-lasting war occurred between the supporters of Yavuz Sultan Selim and Shah Ismail. Mahrami (d. 1535), one of the 16th century poets, included the conquest of Mardin Castle in a section of 66 couplets in his poetic Ottoman history, Shahnama. In the last couplet of this chapter, in which the difficult struggles of both sides are explained in detail in a literary language, the date of the event is written on the account of abjad for the conquest of the castle. In this article, the inclusion of the city of Mardin among the Ottoman lands was discussed with the narration of Mahrami in Shahnama and the importance of evaluating the work as one of the reference sources in the researches on the conquest of Mardin was pointed out.
