Abstract

BEING A REGULAR AT THE MARKET OF PERSONALITIES: AN AUTOETHNOGRAPHIC NARRATIVE OF MASCULINITY

Abstract

As a person who wishes to contribute to the masculinities scholarship, I think the best place to start is oneself, and this first step is the subject of this story. The stories of numerous male scholars in the book Men and Masculinity (1974) edited by Joseph H. Pleck and Jack Sawyer, and the movement they partook in (profeminist Men’s Liberation Movement) has inspired me to write this article. This story is an attempt to grasp my past that was entangled with the masculinity crisis, adopting, and utilizing the local/regional and global masculinities in order to stand against traditional family values, but also standing against these masculinities themselves and creating my own ways to cope throughout my early childhood, adolescence, and early adult periods, untangling them. By using concepts such as hegemonic masculinity, alternate masculinities, protest masculinity patterns (Connell and Messerschmidt 2005, Messerschmidt, 2018) and masculinity crisis (Horrocks, 1994), I will try to find the origins of my masculinities and try to decipher their structures. Hence, the story you are about to read is a mirror held by the author to himself, in which he tries to uncover his life through an autoethnographic lens, accompanied by theories and ideas.
