Mining waste at Balya (Balıkesir) was studied and divided into two categories, flotation and smelting. 90 flotation samples and 14 smelting samples from the waste were collected to analyse the valuable elements. XRF results show that the flotation waste has an average of 4.38 wt% Pb, 4.1 wt% Zn, 8.48 wt% Fe and 0.29 wt% Cu content; while the smelting waste includes an average concentration of 3.16 wt% Pb, 11.08 wt% Zn, 26.53 wt% Fe, and 0.22 wt% Cu. The chemical data related to the waste were interpreted by statistical analysis. Using the determined geostatistical parameters, the area variation on the basis of grade was determined using the Ordinary Kriging method. Quantity, tonnage, density and tonnage change values of the mining waste were used in the constructed block model. The amount of the possible reserves of the waste was then determined. A resource of 516,674 tons for the smelting and flotation waste was assessed. Excluding Fe and Cu, this study revealed that mining waste in the Balya region has an operable content of Pb and Zn. However, more detailed research and development work is required for the recovery and disposal process of the Pb-Zn-rich areas, due to the presence of some sulphate minerals (bassanite, anglesite), the oxidation processes, and the partial sedimentation and heterogeneous structure of these wastes.
