In this study, history coursebooks which play a
significant role in building up a collective national memory were investigated.
The aim of this study is to put forward how the Armenian issue was handled in
high school history coursebooks. Issues relating to the Armenian problem are
still important and accusations on the Republic of Turkey are brought forward
on these matters; hence, these issues need to be handled with care and
collective national memory has to be formed regarding this issue. In this
context, the data that was gathered through document screening was examined
using descriptive analyses. Deficiencies on topics such as the last era of the
Ottoman Empire, the effects of nationalism and the Armenian issue were noted on
these books, which were prepared by the Ministry of National Education and used
in 2018-19 academic year. It was noted that these books were written without
exploring new studies, and different authors of the book wrote clashing ideas
on identical topics. Furthermore, it was observed that these books were written
according to the thoughts and feelings of the authors rather than academic
facts. Similarly, it was seen that topics relating to Armenians were handled
very differently, and they were far from reviewing new notions and findings. Suggestions
were provided to make the coursebooks suitable for the purposes of national
education.
