The research aims to examine the relationship between perceived helicopter parenting and self-handicapping. In addition, it was also examined whether the perceived helicopter parenting levels showed a statistically significant difference according to the variables of gender, time spent for university education, and whether they lived in the same house with their parents. The research was carried out with the participation of 931 university students who could be reached online. Personal Information Form, Perceived Helicopter Parental Attitude Scale and Self-Handicapping Scale were used as data collection tools. IBM SPSS Statistics 26.0 program was used in the analysis of the data. Pearson product-moment correlation analysis, simple linear regression analysis, independent groups t-test and one-way analysis of variance were used in the analysis of the data. The results of the research showed that university students’ perceived helicopter parenting levels were low and self-handicapping levels were moderate. It was observed that 7.6% of the students perceived their mothers as helicopter parents and 2.9% of them perceived their fathers as helicopter parents. A positive, low-level and statistically significant relationship was found between perceived helicopter mother and father attitudes and self-handicapping. It has been determined that this relationship is valid for all sub-dimensions of the Perceived Helicopter Mother and Father Attitude Scale. In addition, it was observed that the perceived helicopter mother and father attitudes had a statistically significant predictive role on self-handicapping levels. Statistically significant differences were found in the level of helicopter mother attitude perceived by university students according to the variables of gender, duration of university education and whether they live in the same house with their parents. It was concluded that there was no statistically significant difference in perceived helicopter father attitude levels according to these variables. The results of the research were discussed and interpreted within the framework of the literature, and some suggestions were presented based on the results.
