Addressing the effects of the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes of February 6, 2023, one of the largest and most destructive disasters of the century, and the disaster management process in all its dimensions is important in terms of reducing the destructive effects of future disasters. This study was conducted to identify the challenges faced by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in urban search and rescue processes during the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes and to develop recommendations for improving these challenges and urban search and rescue activities. Since qualitative studies are based on obtaining detailed data on a subject, in this study, qualitative interviews were conducted with team leaders of five non-governmental organizations that participated in search and rescue activities in Kahramanmaraş earthquakes through purposive and snowball sampling. Semi-structured interview forums prepared by the researchers were used in the interviews. The data obtained from the interviews were analyzed with MAXQDA20 qualitative data analysis program. As a result of the analysis, four main themes, namely preparation, mobilization, operation and termination of the mission, which are accepted in international standards (INSARAG), and seven categories under these main themes were formed. As a result, it is concluded that NGOs play an active role in urban search and rescue processes, and in order to improve their responsibilities, they should be supported financially by public institutions, standardization of trainings and acceleration of accreditation processes, provision of modern technological equipment for search and rescue, and provision of trainings on these devices.
