Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool that can be used to determine the time management skills of primary school students in the learning process.
Method and Materials: During the scale development procedure, the relevant literature was reviewed, draft items were developed, expert opinions were sought, the scale was applied and, subsequently, validity and reliability analyses were performed. The participants of the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) consisted of 453 primary school students (n3rd = 235 and n4th = 210) located in Istanbul. The content validity of the scale was examined through the literature review and the expert opinions. The construct validity was examined using exploratory factor analysis.
Results: The KMO value of the scale was calculated as .90 and the result of Bartlett’s sphericity test was found significant. Based on the results, a latent structure was obtained consisting of two factors and 14 items explaining 46% of the total variance. The first factor was called Effective Time Usage (10 items) and the second factor was called Procrastination (4 items). A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed as well. The participants of the CFA included 331 primary school students (n3rd = 178 and n4th = 153) in Istanbul. The two-factor latent model had acceptable fit indeces. The reliability of the scale was tested using Cronbach’s alpha internal reliability coefficient and determined as 82. The findings showed that the developed scale is a valid and reliable measurement tool that can be used to measure the time management skills of primary school students.
