Community Service Practices (THU) is an undergraduate course in Art
Teaching Division. The course aims to present a specialization in social
sensitivity, awareness, cooperation, solidarity, effective communication,
self-assessment skills and knowledge. In this study, one of the applications of
THU course is presented. The walls of the Harran University Research and
Application Hospital, Children Oncology Service were painted by 21 senior Art
Teaching Division students within the scope of THU course.
This study aims to draw inferences about the thoughts of the candidate Art
teachers on the application process itself, also on the paintings and the story
that they applied to the walls of the hospital for the children. Data were
collected by a semi-structured interview, in which students answered five
questions. Qualitative data analysis methods were used to interpret the
results. In conclusion, the application helped teacher candidates to be aware
of opportunities to serve to community, and children outside school settings.
Also, the application raised the teacher candidates awareness about
understanding children in specific needs, and how to communicate with them.
